Hi there,
Some of you who know me probably realize that I hadn't been doing too much with myself for quite awhile. I'd been in Alaska, but have since come back to Ontario. I've also managed to land myself a place in college...long overdue, but here I am. It's a software support program...I'm basically learning how to make, use, deal with and troubleshoot software.
To that end, I just wanted to test the water and see if there are any other programmers out there. I'm taking a Java class this semester, and am using Sodbeans, which is a port of Netbeans with sound support. I'll be doing Microsoft .net stuff later on as well, not to mention PHP, SQL and perhaps C++.
Have we got any other programmers here, potentially interested in talking shop? At this point, I want to do anything I can to increase both my understanding and my functionality; the more I know and learn, the better I can succeed in classes and the more well-armed I will be when I'm ready to take the plunge into the IT job market.
I am doing a course in information technology. I have to do programming. I am using Windows 8 on a laptop and will be doing Java programming soon. However, sodbeans doesn't seems to work for me. Any ideas to how I can remedy this? Is sodbeans not compatible with Windows 8? Is there any other java programming program I can use? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
You can use notepad:) but sodbeans works fine here. What setup are you using?
I've literally just started, as of last week. I'm using Sodbeans 3.5 if that helps any.
I am running windows 8 on a HP laptop with NVDA as my primary screenreader. I installed Sodbeans 3.5 but it could not start. It tries to start but at a certain stage [according to my teacher], it just stops loading. I tried to enable java access bridge to use netbeans with but Netbeans can't start now. Did I do anything wrong? Are other screenreaders more accessible with these? Or is it because of Windows 8?
Best of luck. I was going for business management but I'm working on getting my major changed now. I took one IT related class called business info systems. There we learned the parts and functionality processes of computers, how to do business related tasks in excel, and how to create and manage a database for large amounts of data and information. I know a lot about computers but I couldn't see myself working with them as a career.
I frankly don't know. I know that sodbeans takes a while to load, but I'm still running version 3.0.1; I should really update that. NVDA is definitely the best screenreader for sodbeans because the sodbeans wrote the IDE primarily for NVDA integration.
Have you guys tried out Eclipse for use with Java? I've heard that it is a bit better than Sodbeans.
Should go and try that. Thanks for the advices.
Definitely try NVDA, Shepherdwolf. Even just to check it out. It's really easy to get the eloquence addon as well and I'll help you with it if you have difficulty with it.
About NVDA, how do you guys get NVDA to work with eloquence voices?
Right, so, Eloquence with NVDA:
Once you have NVDA installed, make sure it's running, then go to:
http://jeff.vrnw.org/NVDA.htm
On that page, you will see a long list of headings. Scroll down until you find "standard eloquence ". Download the addon, then click on it to install it. Make sure, as I said, that NVDA is running at the time. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that it will only be recognized properly if NVDA is active at the time. It installs in seconds, it's quite easy. Then, navigate to the NVDA menu and adjust your synthesizer preferences so that you are now using Eloquence. Good luck!
Thank you! It works.
NVDA with Eloquence... sounds good! If it works, it should work also with my Hungarian Profivox that is the Jaws's Hungarian voice. I'd be glad because am using Win7 with Jaws11 because the Hungarian Jaws14 didn't come out yet and sometimes i feel that Jaws11 isn't enough for Win7. NVDA is better but i've to tell i don't like its original voice...
You're very welcome.
if your interested in using programs like netbeans, a good alturnitive is aptana studio. It is an entire stand alone programming envirement.
I've used Eclipse with JAWS and had good success.
I found out why I couldn't run Sodbeans on my laptop. Apparently, there was a bug that did not allow it to initialise run properly on Windows 8. The problem is now resolved. I can now run Sodbeans on my laptop! I have found it useful and usable so far. Thank you to all who had advised.
